Parent and carer involvement & privacy

Support for a young person also means being thoughtful about the role of parents and carers.

Parent and carer involvement

How parents or carers are involved will depend on the young person’s age, needs and individual circumstances. For younger children, parents or carers may be more involved in the counselling process. Teenagers may be given more space to speak privately and build trust with their counsellor.

Where appropriate, Sally can provide general guidance about how parents or carers may support the young person outside of sessions.

Privacy and trust

Privacy is important in helping children and teenagers feel safe and comfortable during counselling. At the beginning, Sally will explain how privacy works and what information may be shared with parents or carers.

Details discussed in sessions are generally kept private. However, information may need to be shared when there are concerns about the young person’s safety, someone else’s safety, or where disclosure is required by professional or legal obligations. Where appropriate, Sally will discuss this with the young person before information is shared.
